By being more clever than they, he is able to blind the people to the truth so that they refuse to seek wisdom. From early childhood the people have been programmed to NOT believe that there is but one True God and they have learned to abhor wisdom. They therefore do not seek God. When their belly button starts rubbing on their back bone, even then there will be few who seek Him, and most will shake their fist at space and curse God. But ask? NEVER for most.
